Welcome to Born to Pharm!

We are Adam and Melissa Navinskey and we are excited you took the time to stop by and see what this blog is all about!  You may be wondering about the title of our blog- Born to Pharm- and why it is spelled with a "ph."  We came up with this title because it combines our professions- farming and pharmacy.  You can expect to see posts about life on a farm in northeast Kansas and my experiences as I go through pharmacy school.

Our Individual Stories
I grew up on my family farm in northeast Kansas and I was involved in 4-H and FFA growing up.  I pursued my love of agriculture at Kansas State University, and then I decided to pursue my second passion, which is helping people. I applied to pharmacy school and I'm now in my fifth year of school at The University of Missouri- Kansas City. The blog will occasionally highlight what is going on in school and I try to write a Pharmacy Fact Friday post every now and then.  The majority of my posts are about what is going on at the farm, but I also like writing about agricultural issues, recipes, and running.

Adam grew up on his family farm 35 miles north of my family farm. He is a fourth generation farmer and farms with his dad and grandpa. Adam loves farming, but his number one passion is raising cattle and improving the herd. He enjoys sharing this passion with our neighbor boys when he has the opportunity.

Our Operation
Adam and my father-in-law work together to farm approximately 2,500 acres of corn, soybeans and wheat in Kansas and Missouri.  Right now our cattle herd consists of Angus and Angus-Cross cows. Our cattle numbers are running around 50 cow/calf pairs and we kept back 10 yearling heifers this year. My father-in-law has 100 cow/calf pairs and he kept back 35 replacement heifers this year. The crops and cows kept us busy, but we wouldn't have it any other way.  We love the hours spent in the field and with the cattle.

How We Met
Adam I were both involved in 4-H and we met eleven years ago at our county fair. After taking care of our animals for the night we would get pork burgers from the concession stand and sit on the tailgate of his truck and talk for hours. We went on our first date the Saturday after the fair and as they say, the rest is history. We said "I do" in July of 2009 and we have been navigating our way through life, marriage, school, and work ever since. At times, farm life and pharmacy school are not easy things to get through, but I'm blessed to be with such a supportive husband and I hope he can say the same about me when times are tough on the farm.

Our Favorite Posts
My favorite post is "The Truth About Being a Farmwife."  I poured my heart out in this one, and it is a post that has also allowed me to connect with other farm wives who are going through similar situations.

Adam's has a few favorite posts, "Saving Lives" is about the time he saved a newborn calf's life and how rewarding that was for him. "Goin' Gamblin'" is a post he wrote about how risky it can be to be a farmer.
